Holiday safety tips
Christmas time is a time to celebrate with your family, friends and loved ones, but if you have an aging senior in the family, it is also a time to pay particular attention to the changes you make to your home.
Christmas trees and decorations involve combustible materials, and they should therefore be avoided as much as possible. If so can’t be done, then try your best to keep these materials away from bare electrical wires, fireplaces, or candles so that they do not become ignited easily.
To be on the safest side, install a smoke detector in each room of your home, or of your senior’s home, and make sure to have at least one fire extinguisher to combat small house fires.
Also, when decorating your home with Christmas lighting, make sure extension cords do not become tripping hazards. Do not string cords across your floor or hide them under rugs, as this may cause elderly people who shuffle their feet, or who use walkers or canes, to easily fall. Use the same consideration when decorating outdoors. Extension cords for outside lights and yard displays should in fact also be tucked safely away near the base of your home, in order to keep walkways clear at all times.
